Who is Rick Jones?I was born with music in my blood. I grew up singing in choirs, and by age 18, I had performed with the San Francisco Symphony, understudied at the San Francisco Opera, and placed second in an international solo competition. I kept at it in college, earning a DownBeat Magazine Student Music Award as both performer with and assistant producer of the nationally-recognized Willamette Singers vocal jazz ensemble.
It was there at Willamette University that I got my start in audio. I recorded and mixed my talented friends, served as a live sound technician, and earned a further DownBeat SMA as assistant producer of the Willamette Singers. I continued to hone my recording, mixing and production skills at industry-renowned Pyramind Training, where I worked with seasoned professionals and got my Avid Pro Tools certifications. |
In 2016, I co-produced my choir Ragazzi Continuo's first studio album. Since 2017, I have been the sole audio editor for all Willamette Singers studio recordings, including 2019's DownBeat SMA-winning That Old Black Magic. During social distancing in 2020, my focus shifted to mixing "virtual choir" recordings, for which I developed a system to get the best sound while simplifying the accompanying video editing. I regularly consult with music directors on implementing my system with their choirs, and also with up-and-coming local rock and jazz musicians on improving their recordings, mixes and productions.
Is Get Ricked right for me?
I specialize in rock, jazz and acoustic music, including choirs and other vocal ensembles. I was weaned on classic rock, fusion, cool jazz and progressive bluegrass, all of which contribute to my sound. My engineering and production are also informed by my long career as a classical musician and training in music theory.
